Global Talent Stream (GTS)
The Global Talent Stream (GTS) is a program operated by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that aims to help Canadian employers hire highly skilled foreign workers in a faster and more efficient manner. It is part of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, which allows Canadian employers to bring foreign workers to Canada on a temporary basis to fill job shortages or to meet specific labor market needs. The GTS is designed to facilitate the recruitment and retention of highly skilled workers in a range of in-demand occupations, including science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and business.
To be eligible for the GTS, foreign workers must have the required skills, education, and work experience for the position they are seeking in Canada. They must also meet the other requirements of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, such as being able to pass a medical examination and not having a criminal record. In addition, they must have a job offer from a Canadian employer that has been approved by IRCC.
The GTS has two streams: the Category A stream and the Category B stream. The Category A stream is for highly skilled workers who are able to demonstrate that they have unique and specialized talent, such as leading-edge expertise or experience in a field of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. The Category B stream is for highly skilled workers in in-demand occupations, as determined by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). These occupations are listed on the Global Talent Occupations List, which is updated regularly to reflect changes in the Canadian labor market.
The GTS is intended to provide a fast and efficient process for Canadian employers to hire highly skilled foreign workers. To apply for the GTS, employers must first submit a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) application to ESDC. This application must demonstrate that the employer has made efforts to hire Canadians or permanent residents for the position, but was unable to find a suitable candidate. If the LMIA is approved, the employer can then submit an application to the GTS.
Once the GTS application is approved, the foreign worker can apply for a work permit through the GTS. The processing time for a GTS work permit is generally much faster than the processing time for a regular work permit, which can take several months. This is because the GTS has dedicated processing times for applications and a dedicated team of immigration officers who are responsible for reviewing and processing GTS applications.
The GTS is an important program for Canadian employers who are looking to hire highly skilled foreign workers to meet their labor needs. It provides a fast and efficient process for bringing these workers to Canada, which can help to boost the Canadian economy and foster innovation and growth in the country. It is also an important program for foreign workers who are looking to come to Canada to work and contribute to the Canadian economy. The GTS offers a great opportunity for highly skilled workers to come to Canada and work in their field of expertise, while also providing them with the opportunity to live and work in a country with a high standard of living and a strong economy.
